Kayaking, Keeping Fit, Karting and Kingswood!
Kayaking is one of the more common adventure training activities on offer within the Air Training Corps. Durham Northumberland Wing Air Cadets has a number of qualified instructors who deliver training to first time kayakers, as well as those who are more experience. The initial session are conducted at an indoor swimming pool to allow the skills to be developed in the warmth before venturing outdoors, either to a lake of the sea. The cadets can progress through the British Kayaking paddle awards to develop their skills through a structured program.
Another way that cadets keep fit is through the squadron’s regular sports session, which can include games, fitness training and inter-flight competitions. Many of these activities are used by the cadets towards other qualifications, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, whereas others have their own personal targets they wish to achieve.
Karting is an activity which is available to cadets, normally during annual camps, to introduce competition while having fun. It is a time for the group to let their hair down and put their skills to the test!
At Kingswood adventure centre visit earlier in the year, the participants completed a wide range of adventure training activities, as well as leadership and communication tasks. As part of the visit aspects of the high ropes course, such as the 3G swing, were undertaken, as well as sports such as fencing. Another visit is being planned for next year, in which other components of the high ropes course will be on offer to challenge and test the participants.
