Flt Lt Gavin Houghton, Squadron Commander at 1338 (Seaham) Squadron ATC, was recently awarded the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service.
His citation states:
“Flight Lieutenant Gavin Houghton joined 1338 (Seaham) Squadron Air Training Corps as a cadet at thirteen years of age, progressing through the cadet ranks reaching the position of Cadet Warrant Officer. On reaching twenty years of age he was appointed as an adult Civilian Instructor in September 2008.
Gavin was a proactive member of staff who took on increasing amounts of responsibility and was commissioned into the RAFVR(T) in July 2011. His leadership was soon recognised the following year with his appointment to Squadron Commander.
Seaham Squadron was a poor performing unit with little success when Gavin took over as Squadron Commander. Once appointed he was able to plan for the future with a programme of increasing events and challenges for the cadets, securing the support and backing of his adult staff with motivational leadership. The improvement in morale, team spirit, cadet numbers and activities were so dramatic the squadron was awarded the Marshall Trophy. This is a national trophy presented to the squadron for showing the most sustained improvement in the Corps over a three year period.
Additionally Seaham were awarded the Lindisfarne Trophy as the best Squadron in Durham Northumberland Wing in 2015. The Sqn are representing the Wing in the Lees Trophy for the best squadron in the ATC.
In his civilian occupation, Gavin is a Programme Manager for the Work and Learning Team which prepares young people for the world of work, to make enhance their chances of employment.
Flight Lieutenant Gavin Houghton is a dedicated Officer who by his personal leadership and outstanding ability has made an enormous difference to those he commands. For his many achievements he is awarded the Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service.”
It’s a huge testament to his timeless hard work and positive drive for the squadron and is very well deserved. From everyone at 1338 (Seaham) Squadron, we wish him huge congratulations on such a tremendous award.
